Service Mower


Installing Deck

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! The machine can become unstable when driving on slopes or at high speeds with front attachment raised or removed. Travel at slow speeds and avoid sudden braking with attachment raised or removed.

1. Turn height-of-cut knob (A) to lowest position.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! The machine may fall or slip from an unsafe lifting device or supports, injuring anyone beneath it.

• Remove key before raising machine.

• Use a safe lifting device rated for the load to be lifted.

• Lower machine onto stable supports or jack stands and block wheels before servicing.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Lift machine at specified points on frame. Using rear bumper as a lift point can damage the frame.


2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

3. Lift front of machine with a safe lifting device at the center hole of the foot plate.

NOTE: If installing a rear discharge deck, install shield.

4. Place deck under machine.

5. Mount PTO shaft (C) on gear box (D).

Picture Note: Be sure to push PTO on axle as far as indicated (E).

6. Mount PTO shaft on pump (F). Be sure fan (G) is as close as possible to the claw (H).

7. Move deck backward.

NOTE: Following procedure has to be done on both sides of machine.

8. Install pin (I) through deck and push arm (J) and lock with bolt (K).

9. Install chains (L).

Clean Grass and Debris From Machine

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Help prevent bodily injury. Before removing belt shield:

• Stop engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

• Prevent burns by allowing engine to cool.

• Disconnect spark plug wire.

• Wear protective gloves when service is performed within the mower blade area.

• Do not operate mower without belt shield.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Clean under decks and in the engine compartment before each use to help prevent heavy grass and thatch build-up on the machine.


1. Remove belt shields from mower deck and clean any grass or debris from around belts and sheaves.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Mower blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

2. Raise seat platform and open the engine cover and remove grass and debris from the engine compartment.

Removing and Installing Foot Plate

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Always operate the mower with the foot plate installed. Operating with the foot plate removed can cause serious injury.

Removing Foot Plate

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Turn bolts (A) 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise.

3. Pull foot plate (C) up using handle (B).

4. Lift foot plate in the direction shown to disengage hinge tabs (D) from holes in the frame.

5. Remove foot plate.

Installing Foot Plate

1. Insert hinge tabs on foot plate into holes in the frame.

2. Lower foot plate.

3. Tighten bolts.

Removing and Installing Mower Deck Drive Belt Shields on Side Discharge Mower Deck

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Help prevent serious personal injury. Do not operate the mower without the belt shields installed.

Removing Belt Shields

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Lower mower deck to the lowest cutting height position.

3. Remove belt shield locking nuts (A).

4. Remove belt shields.

• Lift corner of belt shield from drilled stud (B). Move shield to clear head pins (C).

Installing Belt Shields

1. Install belt shields.

• Move shield to engage head pins (C) and drilled stud (B).

2. Install belt shield locking nuts (A).

Adjusting Mower Deck Drive Belt Tension 60 Inch

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

2. Remove belt shields.

3. Measure length of belt tension spring (A) or (B) from hook to hook. Overall length should be between 220mm and 230mm (8.6 - 9 inch) inside hooks.

NOTE: Replace belt if length is less than 204mm (8 inch) inside hooks after adjusting.

4. Loosen nut (C) or (D).

5. Adjust sheave (E) or (F) until spring is between specified length.

6. Tighten nuts (C) and (D).

7. Install belt shields.

Replacing Mower Deck Drive Belt 60 Inch Rear Discharge

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Fingers and hands can be pinched or crushed. Keeps hands clear of sheave and belt pinch points when servicing belt.

Removing Deck Drive Belt

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Lower mower deck to the lowest cutting height position.

3. Remove foot plate.

4. Remove deck belt shields (A).

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Wear protective eyewear when removing belt from drive sheave. Tension spring may come loose.

5. Remove belt (B) from sheave (C).

6. Remove tension spring (D) from mower deck at the frame side.

NOTE: Sheave (E) must be in the front position (F).

7. Remove bolt (G) and remove sheave (H).

8. Remove bolt (I).

9. Remove tensioner (J).

10. Remove belt.

Belt Installation

1. Remove belt tensioner.

2. Route drive belt (A) around mower deck sheaves as shown but not around sheave (B).

3. Repeat steps 3 to 10 in opposite order.

NOTE: Be sure sheave (C) is mounted in the utmost backward position.

Replacing Mower Deck Drive Belt 60 Inch Side Discharge

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Fingers and hands can be pinched or crushed. Keeps hands clear of sheave and belt pinch points when servicing belt.

Removing Deck Drive Belt

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

2. Lower mower deck to the lowest cutting height position.

3. Remove belt shields (A).

4. Remove foot plate.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Wear protective eyewear when removing belt from drive sheave. Tension spring may come loose.

5. Remove belt (B) from sheave (C).

6. Remove tension spring (D) from mower deck at the rear side.

7. Remove bolt (E) and remove tensioner (F).

8. Remove four lock nuts and cap screws (G) holding mower deck gear bracket to frame.

9. Remove gear box.

10. Remove belt.

Belt Installation

1. Remove complete tensioner and remove mower deck gearbox as shown in “Removing Deck Drive Belt”.

2. Route drive belt (A) around mower deck sheaves as shown but not around sheave (B).

3. Wrap the drive belt around the gear box drive sheave (C) and install gearbox bracket onto mower deck.

4. Place tensioner (D) and mount bolt (E).

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Be sure sheave (F) is pushed forward in its utmost position.


5. Wrap belt around sheave (B).

6. Adjust tension for mower deck drive belt.

7. Install foot plate.

8. Install belt shields.

Checking and Replacing Mower Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Do not work near raised mower deck unless it is safely supported.

Mower blades are sharp. Wrap blades or wear gloves when servicing.

Before performing any service function, wait for all moving parts to stop turning.

Disconnect battery or remove spark plug wire before making repairs.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! When replacing mower blades always use genuine John Deere service parts.


NOTE: Only replace blades. Never straighten or weld them.

Checking Mower Blades

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety Section).

2. Raise the mower deck to the transport position. (Also the 12.7 cm (5 in.) cutting height position.)

3. Raise front of machine with a safe lifting device.

• Support with jack stands and/or wooden blocks.

4. Check mower blades:

• Mower blades should be sharp and free of any damage.

• Inspect blades; sharpen/balance or replace as necessary.

Replacing Mower Blades

1. Use a wooden block to prevent mower blades from spinning.

2. Remove screw (D), hardened washer (C), large concave blade washer (B), blade (E) and deflector cup (A).

3. Install replacement blade:

• Blade wing must face toward top of mower deck.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! When installing the blade:

• Make sure the blade is properly seated on the spindle.

• Make sure the concave side of the large washer faces towards the blade.


• Install deflector cup, hardened washer, blade, large concave blade washer, and cap screw.

• Tighten blade bolts to 122 N•m (90 lb-ft).

4. Lower machine.

5. Adjust mower deck to a desirable cutting height.

Sharpening Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Mower blades are dangerous!

• Always wear gloves while working on blades.

• Always wear safety eye protection when grinding.

• Sharpen blades with grinder, hand file, or electric blade sharpener.

• Keep original bevel (A) when grinding.

• Blade should have 0.40 mm (1/64 in.) cutting edge (B) or less.

• Balance blades before installing.

Balancing Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Mower blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

1. Clean blade.

2. Put blade on nail in a vise. Turn blade to horizontal position.

3. Check balance. If blade is not balanced, heavy end of blade will drop.

4. Grind bevel of heavy end. Do not change blade bevel.
