The true cost of fuel

Thanks to JDLink you can get accurate information on fuel consumption and running costs. This technology does also allow our dealers to advise you on how to manage your machines better.

Our research shows that fuel is the single biggest running cost - typically up to half the total cost of owning a tractor over 4 years.

Choosing the right tractor

Choosing a fuel efficient tractor is the first step to cutting your fuel costs. Engine specification can be deceiving. What matters is how efficiently power is delivered to the ground and the PTO. John Deere designs and manufactures many of the drivetrain components. It means we are able to ensure that individual components work together in harmony, minimising power losses and maximising fuel efficiency.

  1. Compact cooling package with excellent airflow optimises engine output and fuel economy
  2. High transmission efficiency of DirectDrive, e23 PowerShift and AutoPower minimise losses
  3. Axle design and wide tyres put more power to the ground

The DLG is an independent organisation which has been testing farm machinery from more than 50 years. Their PowerMix test measures the specific fuel consumption under fourteen different workload scenarios including PTO, hydraulic and transport modes.

Average value multiplied by power yielded by the respective JD model in the DLG transport (40k) test. Assumptions: diesel cost =1 €/l, DEF cost=0,7 €/l, Diesel density=0,8247 g/ml, DEF density= 1,09 g/ml. Measuring fuel efficiency

You don’t have to take our word to know what your fuel consumption is, neither do you have to keep any records yourself.  Any tractor equipped with JDLink remote monitoring provides data for fuel consumption, engine load utilisation, idle time and more.

To monitor your fuel consumption set up an account at the Operations Center, myjohndeere.com or you can use the mobile app on your smartphone. Now you can work with your dealer if you wish to identify opportunities for improving fuel efficiency.

Fuel saving tips in transport

Check tyre pressures regularly
Various studies have shown that fuel consumption can be up to 15% more if the wrong tire pressure is set up. For transport, tires manufacturers advise to add 0.4 bar to reduce rolling resistance and at the same time fuel consumption.

Use satellite navigation
Get to the right field every time.  You’ll save on unnecessary detours, wasted fuel and you’ll get the job done faster.

Optimise your ballast
Did you know that every unnecessary ton of ballast increases fuel consumption by 1 l/h? Check your tractor balance weights and make sure you’re not carrying too much.

Drive smoothly
Rapid acceleration and braking wastes fuel. Keep to a steady speed if you can and try and anticipate any obstacles or hazards to avoid sudden changes.

How the programme works

The fuel guarantee programme is valid and offered only by participating John Deere dealers from 1st September 2017 until 31st October 2018 for all new, never retail sold 6R (6 cylinder), 7R and 8R Series tractors. The guarantee programme is only valid for transport applications (above 20 km/h) in accordance with the provided JDLink data.

The incentive applies for the first year of ownership. John Deere will refund the difference between the average fuel consumption in transport mode and the target fuel consumption. If the consumption is above the target, the refund will be based on the number of extra litres of fuel used.  If it is under the target the refund will be based on 2 x the number of litres of fuel saved.

Enrolment to the program is not compulsory, but must be completed on the same day as the tractor is delivered to you. In parallel, your dealer may offer you a FarmSight dealer service package including when and how he will support you in using correctly your tractor2 with JDLink.

Maintenance and repair costs

Customer surveys consistently show that machine reliability and uptime solutions are the most important topics for any farming business. Regular maintenance is essential to maintain tractor reliability, optimum fuel efficiency and uptime.

Independent studies show that John Deere tractors are highly cost efficient with low maintenance and repair costs.

* John Deere models: Repair costs are cost of PowerGard Protection Plus (1+4 years; 1000 h/year) in Germany, Nov 2017. Maintenance costs have been calculated using John Deere Maintenance Calculator for 5000 h. Labour cost was assumed to be 60 €/h. PowerGard and Labour costs may vary from country to country. Industry Average: maintenance and repair costs calculated using the KTBL (Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft) 2016 database for a 5 year old tractor with low wear assuming 5 years, 1000 h/year usage. www.ktbl.de

Calculating resale value

Average web resale prices1 of competitor brands show an average of 12£/h depreciation.

Average web resale prices1 show that John Deere 200hp tractors hold their value better than other brands. Depreciation is approximately 2£/h lower.

1 Internal calculation made by John Deere in 2017 based on data collected from Agriaffaires, Traktorpool, Mascus (April/May 2017). Both depreciation curves are the result of using a multivariable non-linear regression. Calculation for a 6R Large Frame and comparable competitive models. Purchase price assumed to be 130.000 €.
