8R Tractors offer a variety of suspension options to fit your specific field conditions or application. There are three options to choose from on 8R Tractors. An air seat with fixed cab offers a great balance of field and road comfort in an economical package. Cab suspension with an air seat reduces high-frequency vibrations typically associated with road transport. The ActiveSeat™ II equipment is typically chosen for field applications to reduce vertical movement and operator fatigue.

Independent-Link Suspension (ILS™) primarily helps deliver power to the ground by maintaining proper tire-to-ground contact through a fully independent system. In addition, ILS greatly improves ride over rough or uneven terrain and drastically decreases power hop.

8R Tractor in the field

All 8 Series Tractors come standard with an 85-cc (5.2-cu in.) hydraulic pump. This pump provides up to 227.1 L/min (60 gpm) hydraulic flow. A dual pump option featuring 85-cc and 35-cc (5.2-cu in. and 2.1-cu in.) displacement hydraulic pumps is available for all 8R and 8RX Tractors. The dual-pump system provides a hydraulic flow of 318 L/min (84 gpm), ideal for running at lower engine speeds. At the rear, up to six selective control valves (SCVs) are available with 1.9-cm (3/4-in.) options.

Boundary and guidance lines in the Land tool

Boundaries and guidance lines are key to running AutoTrac™ guidance or Section Control in the field. In complex and busy situations, failures occur and work is not executed as expected. The creation of boundaries and guidance lines upfront reduces setup time in the field. It also ensures a consistent data set across different machines. Boundaries can be recorded with a machine display and then uploaded into John Deere Operations Center™ application.

Product and tank mix management

John Deere machine displays have a documentation functionality in base to record field work. The correct setup of field work in the display ensures high-quality documentation data. These data can be used later for reporting and analysis. One part of the setup is products (like seed variety, chemicals, or fertilizer) and tank mixes for application work. Manual entry of these items on the machine display is time consuming and spelling mistakes might occur. To reduce number of failures, products and tank mixes can be created prior the season in the office. This ensures quick and correct setup of field work when being in the field.

Build tank mixes with up to 20 products in the Products tool. Gen 4 displays support up to 20 products in a tank mix. The GreenStar™ 3 2630 Display supports up to six products in a tank mix. A notification in the Products tool and Setup File Creator appears after a seventh product is loaded stating how many products each display supports.

Machine dimensions are important to ensure correct behavior of precision ag and display documentation systems. Implement dimensions like widths, offsets, and global positioning system (GPS) offsets can be documented in the Equipment panel in Operations Center web to share them with one or more machine displays.

Access permission management in the Team tool

Access to data needs to be managed. Operations Center web allows farmers to provide different levels of access to employees and partner organizations. With the Team Manager tool, a granular access level management system is available. It is possible to prohibit access or provide view, edit, or manage access levels to field data, machine data, and work planning of the organization. When inviting an employee or partner to the organization, different levels of access can be provided:

To provide access to connected software companies

These access levels are used to provide partner organizations (e.g., contractor, advisor, or neighbor) access to the organization.

For employees who do not need access to the organizations (e.g., a machine operator) or operators without their own MyJohnDeere.com account, names can be generated. These names are used for documentation purposes and show up on the machine display for selection when setting up field work documentation.

Preparing display setup

The setup file transports the prepared machine setup items from the office onto the machine display. Here, a wireless transfer of the setup data is available. The setup file is generated with the Setup File Creator tool where the file is customized based on the items selected. This allows individual selection of data to ensure a clean display.

All uploaded files are stored in Operations Center web and are accessible in the Files tool. The tool allows easy filtering to quickly find a file. From here, one or more files can be downloaded, reprocessed, and transferred to a machine. Connected machines immediately archive the file for further usage on the machine. In the Files tool, it is also possible to archive and share with partner organizations.

If the information needed for setup (like boundaries and guidance lines) already exist, these can be easily imported into Operations Center to get started or to clean up data:

Boundaries: It is recommended to record boundaries in the field using a machine with a small working width or a Gator™ utility vehicle equipped with a guidance system and RTK correction signal. The recorded boundaries can be exported as a setup file from the machine display and uploaded wirelessly or with a data drive.
Boundaries from third-party software: If boundaries are already available in third-party software tools, these can be upload in shapefile format to get started faster.
Guidance lines: These can be shared via setup file from the machine display with the Operations Center organization to store and reuse the lines.
Products: If correctly spelled products and tank mixes are available on the machine, they can also be exported via setup file.
Machine offsets: Machine offsets can automatically be added if the machine has been generated in Operations Center and dimensions and offsets are added later in the field.

By reusing existing master data, starting with Operations Center becomes quick and easy. Once uploaded, the data can be reused and stored. Operations Center becomes the data backup.

Operators ready to take a step toward automation in their precision ag journey are ready for the CommandCenter Automation activation. CommandCenter Automation 4.0 Activation is a non-transferrable display activation compatible with any John Deere machine equipped with a Gen 4 4600 CommandCenter Display and v2 server. Universal Automation 4.0 Activation is a transferrable display activation compatible with a Gen 4 4640 Universal Display. Functionality is dependent on machine configuration and may require additional hardware. Data created with a Gen 4 display is only compatible with John Deere Operations Center and can be transferred either wirelessly or via a USB drive with 4- to 32-GB capacity.

Producers choose stepless transmissions for precision work and overall drivability. Current stepless transmissions are better than ever, but the current design limits true potential. Replacing hydrostatic power with electric power unlocks the ability to monitor exact load through each major drivetrain component, improves diagnostics, and increases reliability. The eAutoPowr/EVT transmission delivers power precisely where needed and is available as optional equipment on 8R 410, 8RT 410, and 8RX 410 models.

Optional electric power generation is available on 8 Series Tractors equipped with eAutoPowr/EVT. It enables powered implements to increase productivity and protect the soil. Electric power generation enables a world where powered implements can increase productivity and help protect the soil by limiting slip without the need for a larger tractor or additional ballast. The future possibilities are endless with electric power generation; it has the potential to change the way farm equipment is approached.

Electric power generation is available for traction control only (for example, powered axles). Control of electric motors, such as planter electric power generation, is currently unavailable. Overview

Electric power generation offers a different approach to tractor and implement sizing and equipment utilization. With 100 kW (134 hp) (480V AC) of electrical power available for traction assist via powered implement axles, the ability to pull wider or larger implements without a larger or heavier tractor is a reality. This technology is only available on John Deere 8 Series tractors equipped with the eAutoPowr™ transmission and optional electric power generation.

NOTE: The 100-kW (134-hp) electric power does not come on top of the power the diesel engine generates. The electric power needs to come out of the maximum engine power.

eAutoPowr and electric power generation components

Electric power generation utilizes power already being created through the electric motor generators (2) built into the eAutoPowr transmission (4). The electric motor generators then supply raw power to the inverter (5) and on through the power connector (3) located at the back of the tractor. An integrated cooling circuit (1) ensures smooth, consistent operation. Simply put, this system is like a diesel genset with a transmission that can supply power to the tractor drivetrain and generate power for implement use. In the future, this system could not only provide tractive power as it does today, but it also provides power to tractor auxiliaries similar to technology used and proven in construction.

Potential benefits of traction assist enabled by electric power generation:

Primary and secondary tillage – Use wider implements on the same size tractor or with the same ballast level by powering implement axles to increase traction through tough conditions.
Planting and seeding – Use wider implements via increased traction to handle challenging terrain with the same tractor and ballast or the same implement with a lighter tractor.
Application – Use wider or larger capacity implements on the same size tractor or with the same ballast level by powering implement axles to increase traction through tough conditions.
Harvest – Use larger capacity wagons on the same size tractor or a smaller tractor on the same capacity cart by powering implement axles to increase traction through tough conditions.

Joskin is the first company partnering with John Deere to leverage traction assist enabled through electric power generation. Traction assist provides improved traction by powering two axles of the Joskin slurry tanker, essentially turning a 4WD tractor into an 8WD application system.

The drive system is very easy to use as it is fully integrated into the existing vehicle concept and does not require any additional operator panels. The operators can easily switch traction assist on or off in the CommandCenter display. The CommandCenter display also shows the operator the distribution of electrical energy between the tractor and external consumers.

The Joskin E-Drive system controlled by traction assist, with two axles electrically driven by one 100-kW (134-hp) electric motor, increases the overall traction by utilizing the unused weight of the implement during slurry injection with a tine incorporator. This feature enables contractors to operate relatively smaller hp tractors with up to 100 percent wider implement. The result is an increase of up to 45 percent productivity and a decrease of application cost of up to 25 percent per hectare, all while maintaining high soil quality.

Minimum wheel slip and highest crop protection are key in grassland applications

While injecting slurry into grasslands, high rates of slip can occur causing significant crop damage. Through the use of the Joskin E-Drive controlled by traction assist, operators experience increased traction by utilizing the weight of the implement over the two powered axles. This technology helps reduce crop damage caused by excessive tractor wheel slip. This results in increased yields and forage quality, while preventing potential replant cost.

The theoretical maximum pulling force of the Joskin slurry tanker equipped with the E-Drive system controlled by traction assist is 45 kN (10,116.4 lbf). Under the assumption of a typical traction coefficient of 0,4, the electric motor supports the tractor with a power equivalent to 11,5 tonnes (25,353.2 lb) of additional ballast on the tractor. This additional ballasting weight of the tractor is not required when using the Joskin E-Drive system and can be saved.

Up to now, for the time-critical slurry application due to current restrictions, it was accepted to use relatively high wheel slip values of 8 to 12 percent to achieve optimum traction efficiency. The electric drive axles reduce these high wheel slip rates by up to 50 percent and thus dramatically increase the performance and efficiency of the entire system. In addition, the much lower tractor weight protects the soil from harmful compaction and ensures higher yields.

High-performance nutrient application – Value proposition

The reference system is a competitive tractor with 385.5 engine kW (517 engine hp) with an incorporator width of 6 m (19.7 ft) and an application speed of 11.5 km/h (7.15 mph), which reaches a real performance of 3.5 ha/h (8.65 acres/hr).

The John Deere 8R 410 Tractor with eAutoPowr system and Joskin E-Drive system with two driven axles and a 50 percent greater incorporator width of 9 m (29.5 ft), can achieve a 23 percent higher area performance at 4.3 ha/h (10.6 acres/hr), despite a reduction in the working speed to 9.5 km/h (5.9 mph).

If the width of the 8R 410 system doubles to 12 m (39.4 ft), productivity increases of 45 percent (5.1 ha/h [12.6 acres/hr]) are achieved, despite reduced speed to 8.5 km/h (5.3 mph). A system cost calculation, taking into account investment and operating costs, clearly shows that the cost of the procedure can be reduced by 15 percent and 25 percent respectively compared to the reference system, without taking into account the benefits of soil protection and higher yields.

Poor traction during slurry injection with a strip-till injector is often experienced, resulting in less precise nutrient application, uneven gap rows, and a damaged seed bed. With the increased traction enabled through the Joskin E-Drive controlled by traction assist, operators can create perfect parallel rows and optimally apply nutrients in the seed bed. This allows for the best nutrient utilization, resulting in higher crop yields.

Joskin, as John Deere’s partner for electric power offboarding, can implement the E-Drive system controlled by traction assist into their manure spreaders as well.

Spreading manure in hilly terrain traditionally requires the use of heavy rear wheels weights to counteract the weight distribution of the spreader, especially when the spreader is less than half full and driving upwards. The additional traction provided through traction assist, utilizing Joskin E-Drive, allows for a reduction in tractor rear wheel weight, reduces soil compaction and disturbance, and decreases slip and maintaining productivity.
