Service Mower


Removing Mower

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Allow engine and muffler to cool completely.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous. Before adjusting or servicing mower:

• Disconnect spark plug wire(s) or battery negative (-) cable to prevent engine from starting accidently.

• Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

3. Adjust mower cutting height to lowest position (A).

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Lift pedal is spring-assisted and may have unexpected movement.

Lock lift pedal when installing or removing mower deck.

NOTE: Because a lift assist may be installed on your machine, you will need to lower deck and then pull lift pedal back by hand to lock the lift lever.

4. Lower mower deck, pull back lift pedal by hand, and pull lift lever up to lock.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Component is spring-assisted and under tension. Injury can occur if spring-assisted component is released suddenly.

5. Using a 3/8 in. ratchet, rotate and hold tension arm (A), under right side of fender deck, counterclockwise (B), while removing mower belt from engine sheave.

6. Remove spring locking clip and pin (C), and move rear draft arm (D) away from deck bracket (E). Raise deck slightly with deck handle to remove pressure on pin when pulling out. Repeat on other side.

7. Clean area around rubber boot (F) under right side of machine fender deck, and remove rubber boot from raised opening (G) of blower adapter housing.

8. Remove grass collector from rear of machine. Move chute (H) rearward to disconnect from blower adapter.

9. Remove front draft rod (I) from mower bracket (J).

10. When operating the machine without the mower deck:

• Remove locking clip (K) from stud (L) on each side, and remove front draft rod from draft bracket (M). Note orientation of stud offset when removing; correct offset is above rod.

11. Raise draft arms to transport position.

12. Slide mower out from under the machine.

Installing Mower

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Allow engine and muffler to cool completely.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous. Before adjusting or servicing mower:

• Disconnect spark plug wire(s) or battery negative (-) cable to prevent engine from starting accidently.

• Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

3. Adjust mower cutting height to lowest position.

4. Slide mower deck under tractor and line up deck bracket (A) with draft arm (B).

5. Unlock lift lock lever.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Lift pedal is spring-assisted and may have unexpected movement.

Lock lift pedal when installing or removing mower deck.

6. Pull lift pedal by hand to lower draft arms. Hold pedal securely and lock lift lock lever.

7. Install front draft rod (C) into mower bracket (D).

If draft rod assembly has been removed from machine:

a. Install mounting stud (E) into draft bracket (F) at each side. Note orientation of stud offset when installing, correct orientation is for stud to be offset above draft rod.

b. Secure each side with locking clip (G).

c. Install draft rod into mower bracket.

8. Install pin (H) through deck bracket (A) and draft arm (B). Make sure pin installs completely through deck bracket, and secure with spring locking pin. Repeat for other side.

9. Move mower chute (I) forward and slide into blower adapter.

10. Be sure raised opening (J) on blower adapter housing and rubber boot (K) under right side of machine fender deck are clean. Install rubber boot onto raised opening of blower adapter housing.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Component is spring-assisted and under tension. Injury can occur if spring-assisted component is released suddenly.

11. Using a 3/8 in. ratchet, rotate and hold tension arm (L), under right side of fender deck, counterclockwise (M), while installing mower belt onto engine sheave.

12. Level mower.

Replacing Mower Drive Belts

Replacing Primary Mower Drive Belt

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in SAFETY section.)

2. Allow engine and muffler to cool completely.

3. Remove mower deck.

4. Remove hardware and sheaves (A) and (B).

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Components are installed under spring tension. Wear eye protection and use proper tools when installing and removing components with spring tension.

5. Remove hardware (C) and idler arm (D), being careful to move arm carefully while disconnect spring (E) from idler arm.

6. Remove hardware and sheave (F) from idler arm.

7. Remove primary drive belt (G) from around all remaining sheaves.

8. Inspect belt for wear or damage; replace as necessary.

9. Clean top surface of mower deck and sheaves.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! The belt will be damaged if installed wrong. Route the belt properly through belt guides. See belt routing label on mower deck.


10. Install belt around sheave (F) and install sheave back onto idler arm (D). Install spring (E) and idler arm back onto deck with hardware (C).

11. Install belt around sheaves (A) and (B) and install on mower deck, as shown. Route belt around any remaining sheaves. Make sure belt is in the groove of each sheave, there is no twist in the belt.

12. Tighten sheave and idler arm hardware to 54 N•m (40 lb-ft).

13. Install mower deck.

Replacing Secondary Mower Drive Belt

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in SAFETY section.)

2. Allow engine and muffler to cool completely.

3. Remove mower deck.

4. Remove primary drive belt (A).

5. Remove three bolts (B) and left belt shield (C).

6. Remove secondary drive belt:

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Component is spring-assisted and under tension. Injury can occur if spring-assisted component is released suddenly.

• Remove spring (D) from deck hook (E).

• Loosen hardware for two sheaves (F).

• Remove mower belt (G).

7. Inspect belt for wear or damage; replace as necessary.

8. Clean top surface of mower deck and sheaves.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! The belt will be damaged if installed wrong. Route the belt properly through belt guides. See belt routing label on mower deck.


9. Install belt on mower deck as shown. Make sure belt is in the groove of each sheave, there is no twist in the belt, and the belt is inside belt guides on sheaves.

10. Tighten sheave hardware to 54 N•m (40 lb-ft).

11. Install spring back onto deck hook.

12. Install belt shield on top of mower deck. Secure with three bolts.

13. Install mower deck.

Checking for Bent Mower Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

Replace blades if defective. Never straighten or weld them.

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Raise mower deck to highest position to access blades.

3. Measure distance (A) between blade tip and flat ground surface.

4. Rotate blade 180? and measure distance between other blade tip and flat ground surface.

5. Install new blade if the difference between the two measurements is more than 3 mm (1/8 in.).

6. Repeat for all blades.

Servicing Mower Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous. Before adjusting or servicing mower:

• Disconnect spark plug wire(s) or battery negative (-) cable to prevent engine from starting accidently.

• Always wear gloves when handling mower blades or working near blades.

Removing Mower Blades

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

2. Raise mower deck to gain access to mower blades. If necessary, remove mower deck.

3. Block mower blade with a piece of wood to prevent it from spinning.

4. Loosen and remove nut (A), washer (B), and blade (C).

5. Inspect blades; sharpen, balance or replace blades as necessary.

Installing Mower Blades

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! On 42 mulching mower, blades are marked right and left on bottom side of each blade. Make sure to install correct blade to right and left sides of deck.


1. Align the splined center hole in the blade (C) with the splined spindle shaft (G) and put the blade onto the mower spindle shaft with cutting edge toward ground.

2. Install washer (B), with cupped side towards blade, and install nut (A) to secure blade onto splined spindle shaft

3. Block mower blade with a piece of wood to prevent spinning and tighten nut to 68 N•m (50 lb-ft).

Sharpening Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

Always wear safety eye protection when grinding.

• Sharpen blades with grinder, hand file, or electric blade sharpener.

• Keep original bevel (A) when grinding.

• Blade should have 0.40 mm (1/64 in.) cutting edge (B) or less.

• Balance blades before installing.

Balancing Blades

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Blades are sharp. Always wear gloves when handling blades or working near blades.

1. Clean blade.

2. Put blade on nail in a vise. Turn blade to horizontal position.

3. Check balance. If blade is not balanced, heavy end of blade will drop.

4. Grind bevel of heavy end. Do not change blade bevel.

Removing Grass Collector

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Do not attempt to unplug attachment with machine running.

• Rotating blades are dangerous. Shut off the engine and remove the key before getting off the seat to inspect the machine and attachment.

• Thrown objects can cause serious injury. Make sure all machine parts are stopped before raising hopper top or removing chutes.

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

2. Open grass collector, and use two handles (A) to raise grass collector (B) at an approximately 20? angle (C). Remove grass collector from support brackets.

Installing Grass Collector

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous. Blades may throw debris through raised chute.

Park machine safely before opening grass collector.

2. Use two handles (A) to raise hopper assembly (B) onto back portion (C) of support arms, and leave hopper assembly open at an approximate 20? angle (D).

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Make sure arrows are aligned before closing hopper assembly. Damage could occur to machine and/or hopper if arrows are not aligned.


3. With hopper still at an approximate 20? angle, inspect that the center arrow (E) on the hopper aligns to the center arrow (F) on the machine. Move hopper, as necessary, to align the arrows.

4. Push the hopper forward, causing it to fall into the pivot (G) on the support arms. Check again to be sure arrows align, and then close hopper assembly.

Cleaning Pressure Sensor

1. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the Safety section.)

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Do not attempt to unplug attachment with machine running.

• Rotating blades are dangerous. Shut off the engine and remove the key before getting off the seat to inspect the machine and attachment.

• Thrown objects can cause serious injury. Make sure all machine parts are stopped before raising hopper top or removing chutes.

2. Remove hopper assembly and discharge chute. Clean grass and debris from chute and fan outlet.

3. Lower mower deck to lowest setting.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Compressed air can cause debris to fly a long distance.

• Clear work area of bystanders.

• Wear eye protection when using compressed air for cleaning purposes.

• Reduce compressed air pressure to 210 kPa (30 psi).

4. Remove rubber boot (A) from the fan housing.

5. Clean all grass and debris from rubber boot, raised opening (B) in fan housing and hose fitting (C).

6. Install rubber boot so that rib locks into place over rib in the raised opening.

7. Install discharge chute. Make sure chute stops (D) fit against the backplate.

8. Install hopper assembly.

9. Set mower cutting height knob to desired setting.
