L1500 Large Square Balers have ISOBUS as a standard feature. This communication allows using the John Deere GreenStar™ (GS) 1800, 2600, or 2630 Display. Baler control can also be incorporated into the CommandCenter™ controls on R Series Tractors, as long as the tractor is ordered ISOBUS ready.
Balers that will be utilized on non ISO tractors will require a GreenStar display as well as a conversion wiring harness to connect the display and the baler. L1500 Series LSBs can be operated in emergency mode, allowing the operator to continue baling in the event of an electronic failure.

Using ISOBUS allows L1500 LSBs to be teamed with other ISOBUS displays. The GS 1800 monitor perfectly matches traditional baling requirements. It can also be used for guidance and spraying applications.
The John Deere display needs to be purchased through AMS pages and will not be delivered with the machine.

The John Deere L1500 Series Large Square Baler’s (LSB's) twine is stored in single-sealed row twine boxes. The capacity of the twine box has been extended to 30-twine spool in total. From there, the twine is then routed to the gear tensioners. The tensioner gears provide more consistent twine tension during knot formation. This increases knotter performance and consistency.
The design of the twine box allows a twine spool loading without extra effort. The individual spool room allows 11.5-kg (25.4-lb) twine spool size. The twine routing and connection is easy to set up.
Both single-row twine boxes are illuminated by a LED light. This light spot located near the twine exits and remains close to the twine's routing connection label indication. Refilling the twine boxes can be done easily and safely.

The L1500 Large Square Baler (LSB) Series has been designed to provide exceptional easiness of daily maintenance. Hinged shielding improves accessibility to the baler. It makes servicing and inspecting baler components more convenient. Three large, gull-wing doors at the front of the baler offer excellent machine access. The single-row twine boxes pivot at the rear of the box to provide access to the plunger and twine routing and needles.
A maintenance platform is located on each side of the baler. The platforms are conveniently located near the knotter and blower areas. The large platform gives the operator a convenient work area to inspect the knotter area or perform routine maintenance. Crossing from one side to the other side of the baler is easy via the center platform.
John Deere LSBs use a single-feeder fork packer type. It takes the crop from the back side of the rotor and packs the crop in the precompression chamber.
Once the target density is met in the precompression chamber, the stuffer system then completes a longer stroke which places the flake into the bale chamber to be compressed.
The stuffer system runs at 92 strokes per minute which is twice the speed of the plunger. This ensures that every flake experiences a minimum of one compression sweep in the precompression chamber before the crop is delivered to the main bale chamber ensuring excellent bale density and bale shape. Stuffer system is gear and shaft driven for high reliability and consistent timing to the plunger.
Clutch protection is standard on the stuffer-drive system. Optional easy-flow kit is available consisting of low-friction plates that are installed in the floor of the chamber. This kit helps hard-to-move silage crops slide in the chamber more easily.
L1524, L1533, and L1534 LSBs come standard with double-tie knotters feature. The double-tie knotter technology prevents tension on the twine and stress on the knotter frame during baling. The double twine providing, reduces the risk of twine getting away from the knotter to close to zero. Any upper twine tension issue is electronically tracks and shows up on the display.
The John Deere L1500 Series LSB’s twine is stored in single-sealed row twine boxes. The twine is then routed to the gear tensioners. The tensioner gears provide more consistent twine tension during knot formation. This increases knotter performance and consistency. Once the correct bale length is achieved, the tie system clutch is activated.
The double-tie knotter system is gear and driveline driven to ensure the needle-to-plunger timing is maintained throughout the life of the baler. The needle lift crank and clutch rocker arm is made of hardened cast iron to improve strength and durability of the knotter clutch. The gearbox drives the system around 360 degrees to complete a tie.
The knotter frame is directly mounted to the intermittent gear so the frame can be dismounted without servicing the knotter stack.
If service to the knotter stack is required, the knotters are positioned using an adjustment screw instead of shims. This saves time by having the ability to make adjustments at any point of assembly.
The cleaning system uses a dual turbine combination. The design of these turbines is used on the Quadra-Flo™ combine cleaning system to provide high-velocity air for very efficient cleaning. The air flow ramp allows for crop and debris to cleanly exit the knotter table. This increases knotter performance and decreases the amount of time required to blow off the baler. The air ramp is aligned with the walk platform which allows the crop to continue off of the baler. The horizontal axis blower rotation is hydraulically driven by an independent pump installed on the main LSB’s gearbox.
The primary driveline with a wide-angle driveline provides smoother operation and longer life. From the intermediate bearing housing, the secondary driveline transmits the power to the large flywheel of the baler. A 34.9-mm (1.375-in.), 6-spline 1000-rpm power take-off (PTO) driveline is standard equipment. Several options are available to fit the tractor’s requirements. The flywheel is connected to a massive main gear box that powers the baler.
The power from the main drive is transmitted to the rotor through a powershaft and cam-clutch protection. The rotor drives the pickup, a dedicated cam clutch ensures protection in case of overloads.
Power from the main drive is transmitted to the multicrop packer trough a power shaft and cam-clutch protection. After a temporary overload that would affect the timing, the cam clutch will automatically re-engage, there is no need to stop the machine and resynchronize.
The knotters are gearbox and shaft driven for positive, reliable operation and accurate tying. A first left-hand side angled gearbox provides the drive output for the knotter. A second angled gearbox drives the double knotter and needles frame. In between, a drive shaft provides reliability and constant synchronization between key components through the direct drive.
Two very powerful LED lights illuminate the rear of the machine. These lights are positioned on the top hand rail in the center of the platform. This configuration provides the best angle for optimized lighting on the bale-chute device.
In combination with a video camera, even in darker night conditions, the driver is able to operate in safe and comfortable working conditions. The work lighting feature extends the working time frame and the productivity. Controlling the light is done from the display.
The high-capacity feeding system is lightened thanks to an LED light positioned in the middle of the baler tongue, illuminating the pickup and the rotor. The optimized location of the light allows the operator to maintain a constant view of the crop flow as it enters the baler.
Even while operating in dark night conditions the driver is provided with safe and comfortable working conditions. This light configuration will extend producer's working time frame and productivity. Controlling the light is completed from the display.
John Deere large square balers (LSBs) use a pickup drum with a roller baffle to efficiently pick crop up from the field. The performance of the roller baffle compressing the crop against the pickup tines means more crop compressed into the bale, and fewer leaves and crop left in the field. Tooth-to-tooth width is 192 cm (75 in.). Effective working width of the pickup from flare to flare is 230 cm (90 in.).
Both MaxiCut and RotoFlow™ John Deere LSBs employ a heavy-duty feed rotor that utilizes a high-capacity in-line design. The high-capacity design has fewer moving parts to maintain. Incorporating the converging augers into the rotor design as one piece reduces the number of drive sprockets, chains, and bearings needed to drive the system.
The V-shape of the rotor teeth evenly feed the crop into the pre-compression chamber resulting in well-shaped bales that stack easily. The HC rotor is chain driven with a high-torque cutout clutch for protection. The cutout clutch is designed to feed most plugs at lower baler rpm to reduce the time spent unplugging the system.
L1524, L1533, and L1534 are available with/without precutter, offering a cutting length short as 45 mm (1.8 in.).

HC MaxiCut knives can easily be engaged from the cab. A selection allows engaging or removing all of the knives or separate sets of knives. On the MaxiCut HC 23, the system proposes using different sets of knives for a very similar cutting length. For example, the operator can work with 11 knives in the morning and 12 in the afternoon. That combination allows the use of sharpened knives for a longer period of time and saves up to 10 percent fuel.
The MaxiCut knives are spring protected on the L1533 and hydraulically protected on the L1524 and L1534. The hydraulic protection design offers a more consistency load on the knife engagement through the rotor.
In case of a prechamber overload, the prechamber can be opened without any tools. After removing two pins, the floor can be largely open. This large access can also be used for maintenance purposes. From this location, the low-friction plates can be installed when working in green conditions like haylage and silage.
